Songs from the Steel Rails 1850-1925 ![]() Using historical anecdotes, traditional and original songs accompanied on guitar, banjo and harmonica, Rick's program focuses on the central position that Chicago and the state of Illinois hold in the evolution of the railroad system from east to west, north to south and from steam to diesel locomotion.
From The Rock Island Line to The City of New Orleans from Jesse James to The Wreck Of The Old 97 the Steel Rails program weaves a tapestry of history and song into an entertaining and enlightening examination of the social impact the early railroad had on all aspects of American life. | ||

Leap Frogs is a story hour for children who have turned three years old by September 1, 2010. Younger siblings have the opportunity to attend Tiny Tadpoles during this time. Parents are encouraged to leave their child to participate in the activities alone with their peers. One of our goals is to teach the children to be part of a classroom and prepare them for the transition to kindergarten; however, parents must remain in the building. Morning sessions begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. and the afternoon sessions begin at 1:00 p.m. Sign up for either Tuesday or Wednesday morning sessions, or Wednesday afternoon sessions. By signing up for a particular day and time, your child is registered for all sessions.
Tiny Tadpoles are special storytimes for the library's tiniest patrons where a parent or caregiver is a part of the program. Stories, fingerplays, music, social playtime, and peer interactions are incorporated into the 55 minute program. Penny Basenhard (Mrs. B), the facilitator, is a former Kindergarten and Preschool teacher.
Any age may attend, but programming is geared towards children from 6 months to 6 years with a parent or caregiver. Adults are kindly asked to participate in this storytime with their children.
This home school program exposes children to great artists & their works. Children will be allowed to explore the work of each artist that is discussed with hands-on experience creating projects in a variety of media. Classes are held for children who are Kindergarten through 8th grade. Children are divided into two classes by age and meet every other Thursday from 10:00 AM until Noon. Classes are taught by Mrs. Terri Sancken and Lori McCarter. Please contact the Children's Librarian to register for this program.
Admission is free!
